The Making of “They Scared,” Part 1

The lyrics were inspired by a conversation I had with a stranger. We were walking down Dean St., and she was talking to herself:

“My baby girl just had twins.” She had her face in her hands.

I adjusted to her pace. “She had twins today?”

“Yes, about forty minutes ago.” Her eyes brightened. "Everyday my baby girl, I call her everyday and she was crying. We prayin’ everyday for these twin babies. My baby’s been put on bedrest, and everyday on the phone she’s been crying. But today, I call her on the phone, and my baby, she stop crying.”

“I am so happy for you. And they’re healthy?”

“Yes, they’re healthy.” Her eyes darted. “At first I was embarrassed–I’ll be fifty just next month. But us women, we were chosen, we were chosen–I can’t think of the word–we were chosen to carry our children into this world. And now I’m not embarrassed.”

She paused and looked at me. “Thank you for sharing this moment. I am just so overwhelmed, thank you for sharing this with me. You know, most people, they scared, I don’t think they rude, they just scared, and they hold on to their pocketbook and keep walking. Women, we have to take care of each other... we were chosen to carry our children. It’s like Beyoncé said, ‘Who runs the world?’ We do. We really do.”

The conversation became "They Scared":

I call her everyday, my baby girl
She was crying everyday, my baby girl
She crying everyday, we praying everyday
And she had twins today, my baby

I call her on the phone
My baby, she stop crying

But us women, we were chosen
We were chosen to carry our children

To carry our children

Thank you for sharing this moment, this moment, oh
Thank you for sharing this moment, this moment
Thank you for sharing this moment, this moment, oh
Thank you, thank you

You know people, they scared
They just keep walking, oh
You know people, they scared
They just keep walking

You know people, they scared
They just keep walking, oh
You know people, they scared
They just keep walking

But us women, we were chosen
But us women, we were chosen
But us women, we were chosen
To carry our children

But us women, we were chosen / People they scared, people they scared
But us women, we were chosen / People they scared, people they scared

I call her everyday, I call her everyday
I call her everyday, my baby
